The Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral is a wooden Roman Catholic cathedral located in the center of the capital city of Paramaribo, Surinam. It is the largest wooden building in South America, and the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Paramaribo.

The Jodensavanna is a 17th century autonomous Jewish settlement in Surinam. The Jewish immigrants started coming in to Surinam in the early periods of the 17th century, and gradually a settlement came into being. It is located in the Para district, at a distance of about 50 kilometers from the capital of Surinam, Paramaribo.

Right on the bank of the Surinam River, Fort Zeelandia is a clear reminder of the colonial history of Surinam and proof of the complexity of that history. Originally, the French built a wooden fort here, around a Dutch trading post, and when the British took over, they reinforced it and called it Fort Willoughby.

Palmentuin, a large park filled with tall palm trees in the city centre, was made up to look like an Amerindian village. Several huts were set up to make it a home away from home for the people of Carib, Wayana, Arawak, Trio and other indigenous peoples from both Surinam and other countries.

Suriname is a part of the Guyanese shield, between the Amazon and the Orinoco rivers. It is for a large part covered with Amazonian rainforest. The country has some excellent birding places that are easily and safely accessible.
